Cambridge Announces Plans for Eco-Friendly Mosque
This week, the city of Cambridge announced the design of a £13 million "eco" mosque to be built on environmentally sustainable principles. Tim Winter, the chairman of the trust behind the development, claims that it will be Europe's first truly ecologically- responsible mosque and he hopes it will encourage Muslims world-wide to take up their environmental responsibilities. Winter, who is also known as Abdul Hakim Murad, said: "We are using the latest heat pumps, conservation technology and green roofs so that we'll have an almost zero carbon footprint. It is stated in the Quran that God has made believers the stewards and protectors of the Earth and so to harmonise this important environmental ethic with the most important place of worship in Islam makes perfect sense." Designed by the award-winning architect Marks Barfield, who were behind stunning projects such as the London Eye and Kew Treetop Walkway, the mosque is based on the premise of creating an oasis of calm and sustainability in an urban jungle. Winter adds, "This building will be truly inclusive, sustainable, safe, secure and respectful of the neighbourhood." The eco-friendly mosque will be the first purpose-built mosque in the city of Cambridge, and the design will create a new permeable green edge around the structure with trees as well as provide bicycle racks at street levels and a car parking in the basement. After completion, the mosque will be able to accommodate up to 1000 people and include a café, teaching areas and meeting rooms. Similar projects have been carried out in the UK before, such as a £3.5m partially eco-friendly mosque in Levenshulme, Manchester in 2008. It installed solar panels and was built using wood from renewable sources- however energy was not entirely from renewable sources and they outsourced some construction materials from India. http://islamtoday.com/artshow-229-3720.htm |

I found this article about an automatic wudu machine. This machine is supposed to save a huge amount of water. It has sensors that turn on when the hands are put under them.
It says “During the Haj, two million people used 50 million liters water a day for wudu. If they introduce this machine they are saving 40 million liters per day,” he said, referring to the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The link is : http://www.chinapost.com.tw/life/science-&-technology/2010/02/02/243288/Muslim-washing.htm I couldn't just copy and paste the article because the ads came with it and I couldn't delete them. It's an interesting article, tough. |

Hopefully someday there won't be conflict between the major religions of the world. That is certainly not what God would want.

I remember around a couple of years ago, the automatic wudu' (ablution) machine was mentioned in the Muslim press especially in Malaysia. Since then there has not been much talk about it, but saving water is an excellent idea
This is a brief talk by Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad (Timothy Winters) on the new Cambridge masjid and its environmental-friendly design: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoX634q-tf8&NR=1 Edited by Al-Cordoby - 02 August 2010 at 1:43am |
