As many of you know, I have been thinking of converting to Islam.  I have certain concerns that are holding me back.  I was wondering what others struggled with before converting.  I know that many of the answers probably crossed your mind.  But which one caused the most concern or held you back from converting for a while.

For me, it's the complexity of Islam.  Learning prayers.  Fasting.  Hijab.  Knowing manners in Islam.  Worrying that if I don't learn this all well and comply, Allah will not accept me.

Thanks in advance for your answers in the poll or just for replies.
Hopefully someday there won't be conflict between the major religions of the world. That is certainly not what God would want.

For me it was the reaction of my family. And, indeed, I had problems with them, but they didn't give me up thanks God.

Asalaam Alaikum!

I was definitely worried about the reaction of my family. And rightly so, my parents were less than pleased.

Alhumdilillah my wife has been supportive and generally accepts me being Muslim.

Following close behind is learning all the "complexities" of Islam. Learning to pray was a biggie for me. As is fasting for Ramadan.

I already said that the complexity of the religion is a big concern. Close behind is concern about the reactions of friends and family. That is nowhere near as big as my concern about how complex the religion is. Even down to entering the restroom with the left foot and exiting with the right and opposite for masjid. And memorizing prayers for doing the above mentioned activities. It seems like there are rules for almost everything we do.

Yet, I still find myself drawn to Islam.

I dont think of those things as rules so much as just etiquette. Not really a sin to not do them, if you forget or don't know.

Salam alikom sister

what you are worried about is very normal, but you need to know that it shouldn't be like that

the first step after converting to islam is to learn about Tawheed ( monotheism)

then praying
then fasting
then zakah

You are a Muslim once you belief in the 6th beliefs of Islam and said i bear witness that there is no God except Allah alone with no partner and prophet Mohammed is his messenger.

Don'T wait to fully practice Islam to be a Muslim, this is not going to happen, No one is a perfect Muslim, i have been 25 years a Muslim and still learning about islam.

Seven things to do on entering Islam (By Yusuf Estes):

One- The most imp thing in the beginning is to focus on who is Allah? What is Tawheed (monotheism)? And how he is unique in every aspect and this to prepare ourselves for the test that is coming up.

Two- To be ready for the test that is for sure coming up if it hasn't already started.

You will be tested in every way u can imagine and a few that you can't imagine, and this is a part of the whole scheme in coming to Islam.
Allah said in (29:2-3):
"" Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, We believe, and that they will not Be tested?

We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.""

The word used In Quran is "Fitnah" which is more than a test. It has more deep meaning like a trial or being in difficulties, so be ready.

Three-Watch out from Muslims, this may sound weird but the biggest problem that most of us have when we entering into Islam are other Muslims.

Some will try to make everything is so easy for themselves especially, that they will take out important part of Islam and say they only try to make it easy for new Muslims.

Other is so strict that you will feel that u are in a box or in a prison and can't get out

Still others may mistreat and you can't understand what is going on with them and how can all this be

Four- Take every thing in Islam one step at a time and don’t back up from whatever you know

Now this is very essential point upon Islam. Something are small but done on regular basis is most beloved to Allah than something that is big but only done once or twice

So regularity and consistency is the key here.

Five-The Halal and Haram, this is what is permissible and what is forbidden.
This 2 Arabic words can makes you crazy if you don’t find the balance really quickly.

Many arguments occur these days between Muslims themselves over the issue of what is permissible and what is forbidden in Islam and most of the time there is lake of knowledge and understanding regarding these topics ,so it is better not to get into these discussion with people without first having a deep knowledge and background on these matters

It is your right even your duty establish the evidences for what people telling you concerning the matter of what is permissible and forbidden in Islam.

This is not to be taken lightly nor should we be quick to pass information to others without being sure from this information.

When brothers and sisters send you Emails to talk with you regarding subject that fall in this category we recommend that you investigate their proves and evidences before you accept or reject what they are saying and especially before you pass this info to somebody else because when you start to passing information to others whether in the masjed, street, over the telephone or on the internet, this could be a problem. Don't forward Emails on these subjects regardless what the emails tells you to do or reward you are going to get UNTILL you have probably established the evidences for the subject.
We have original recorded sources of our religion in the original language (This is a very unique part of Islam, not available in any other ancient religions):

 A) The Quran

 B) Teachings of Muhammad (pbuh). (Or what we called "hadith")

Number 5 is a big point.

Six- If something doesn’t make sense to you or doesn’t seem to be right, so probably it isn't.

You need to trust your inside feelings based on what you learned in Quran and from the teaching of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, at least to extent that you know Allah will not misguide you
Now the prophet Muhammad told us inside every one a Mufti and the Mufti consider to be your conscious telling you what is right from wrong

Seven-This is the last point, turn back to Allah for every thing you do.

You need to thank him for every good come to you, you have to turn to him for guidance and problems coming to, you have to turn to him and repent from the mistakes and be sure to turn to him in different time and be sure that he is the only one who can change anything or make anything easy for you .

I will keep referring you to point # 2

...Asalaamu Alaykum...May Allah (swt) be please with all of us.....

Brothers and sisters, all the advise that everyone gave to the sister is noted and respected. but honestly who does it really matter. what people think, wether there family (mother, father, sister, or brother), friends, co-workers. the reaction of peoples should not matter "people are afraid of what they dont understand" what only matters is that we Praise Allah (swt), what we do on this earth, as muslims we have to answer for what we did on the day of judgement. Searching...you should do whats best for you and what you feel is right in your heart. Islam is a religion is ease, yes we do have to be or act certain way especially with the way some of these radicals are going around do the work of satan. but that does not means that we are better than a non-believer, nor is a non-believer better than us we are all equal. the Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) taught us that all of us are created equal...the reason for the hijab is for a form of respect and protection how many sister walk down the street and say oh that man blew a kiss at me or hey that guy said this or that so look at the hijab as a form of respect for you and Allah(swt), its a form of a shield so that they may know that your Muslim and not to be bothered. Allah (swt) only wants whats best for us, nothing more nothing less, us as men we have to cover as well we have to dress to a certain code. in some countries men wear just as much as the women do. As for fasting its to show us as mankind to be humble and greatful for what we have in your lives. Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) said in a hadith "One of the keys of happiness in life is to be greatful for what we have, for the next man may have less" so yes we fast for the purpose to thank Allah(swt) for everything that he has given us. learning how to pray is not going to happen overnight so dont even stress about that when i first started praying i was readying it from a book. i would hold the book while i would be praying Salat. then i would write them down on a index card and place the cards on my prayer rug and look down and read them. i did this until i got better and now 6 months later i can recite it in Arabic only two Surahs but Allah (swt) know what my intenstions are and "Who knows more or plans better that HIM" so basically relax and take your time it will come to you. and dont ever think tht Allah(swt) will not accept you. he know whats in our hearts before we do it....if your feelings are true Allah (swt) knows it if your playing games Allah (swt) knows it. Searching do whats best for you and for Allah (swt) at the end of the day on the day of Judgement you will have to answer for your sins no-one elses, on that day its just you and GOD...no family, friends, or loved ones. one more thing what brought you this far to islam there has to be a purpose were you around Muslims your whole life or did one person come in and changed your thoughts, that could be a sign from Allah (swt) calling you to Islam, you can see it that way also... well searching like i said before its whats best for you....
May Allah (swt) bless us all and make you choice easy.
"Allah(swt) will always be with the patient people as long as they have been patient."

It sounds like you have the heart of a Muslim, but your brain resists. I found myself in the same situation before I converted.

Indeed, there are a lot of little details that can make Islam seem intimidating. But you are not expected to know everything at once. You can only do the best you can.

I thought I would never learn how to pray in Arabic. But I found a good transliteration of the prayers and some helpful Muslim friends to encourage me, and I took it one word at a time.

Dear "searching"...

While I know the complexity of the religion seems daunting, as a new revert I will say that maybe Allah doesn't expect you to be as perfect in it from the get-go as you expect yourself to be.
I'm not perfect in prayers but thankfully I am improving every week.
While it's your own choice that you choose, I'd hate to see you miss out on something so beautiful because you expect to not have rigid habits down perfectly.
Don't delay if you believe :-). Eventually you have to say to yourself, "Allah, I need your help to do this right!"
I wish you the best. Iknow your fears well. I'm going through all of the negatives right now with my husband.

Buddiage,

I'm sorry to hear that things aren't going well with your husband.  I know that this was a concern of yours from the beginning.  You are so brave to have converted anyway.  I only wish that I was as brave as you.  You converted despite this much of a challenge and I can't seem to convert because I simply am worried about being able to follow Islam.

Mai, Gabe and Seeker,

Thank you so much for your encouraging words.  I really do appreciate all the help and tips that I can get.  I honestly have this huge internal struggle going on.  A part of me really wants to convert, to just go and say my shahada but then, apparently a stronger part tells me not to do it.

I wish I could just make a decision and feel good about it, but then, that's part of another thread.
Hopefully someday there won't be conflict between the major religions of the world. That is certainly not what God would want.

I want the best for you Searching. I think for me was, part of the fear is you'll lose people... And then fearing you'll come to the conclusion that you'll decide Islam isn't for you after all... And maybe you'll have to rebuild relationships.
Whatever you decide, I know that getting there is hard :-)
