Salaam,

I know that tattoos are not allowed in Islam.  But what about piercings?  I have seen many Muslim women with piercings.  Is this allowed only for the ears or are other parts of the body ok to pierce?  Also, is there a limit to how many holes are allowed in each ear?

Then there is the subject of cosmetic surgery.  I have heard that changing one's body is equivalent to basically saying that Allah did not create us well enough.  There are so many different procedures from facial peels to laser treatments to full surgeries.  I have never had cosmetic surgery of any kind, but I had a laser treatment on my face to reduce redness and get rid of little blood vessels you could see on my cheek due to a skin condition I have.

I was just wondering what Islam says about all this.  Again with the questions...lol.
Hopefully someday there won't be conflict between the major religions of the world. That is certainly not what God would want.

i beleive ear and nose piercings are ok since it is cartilage but i do not think that any other areas are ok especially like a belly piercing. I am not sure about how many holes are ok but remember that everything is islam should be done in moderation so not too may holes.

i think since you had a skin condition then it is ok...but im not sure...anyone else care to answer this part?

and since you did it before you were a muslim (if you ever do become a muslim) then i am postive that Allah will be ok with it because all mistakes and sins of a revert are forgiven so they are like a new born baby.

I guess it makes sense that all our previous sins will be forgiven when we convert because not being Muslims, we don't know what is a sin in Islam so we shouldn't be punished for that. And who would convert if they thought every un-Islamic thing they did in the past would be held against them?

Personally, I had the laser treatment (as I said). I also have a tattoo of a lotus flower and have 4 piercings in one ear and 2 in the other. But I'm not yet a Muslim and that was all done over 2 years ago.

Thanks for the answer you gave. If anyone else wants to add more answers, that would be greatly appreciated.

Wow searching, I didn't imagine you had tattos and piercings  You must look cool!

I'm almost sure that your laser treatment is no problem in Islam. It is not cosmetic surgery that changes Allah's creation as, for example, changing the shape of your nose. Although I read one that even the last one, although generally forbidden, may be permitted if a Muslim has such a big or ugly nose that it causes him psychological problems.

Once I also read that a Muslimah who had no breast at all asked a Sheikh if she may had an operation, because her husband really wanted it and she as well. The sheikh answered that no, it is forbidden. I'm sure this answer is absolutely right...why should she and her husband suffer while she could get better through a little cosmetic operation?

Nura,

I just have a small tattoo. It's a lotus flower on my inner left wrist. It's only about 3 cm across. It's purple and pink colored. I wear an earring in the upper cartilage of one ear and just wear one earring in the lower part in each ear. So I actually don't wear earrings in all the holes in my ears. I like my tattoo. I've never regretted getting my tattoo.

I have a tattoo of a green dot on my right hand...yeah it doesnt look very cool but i got it when i was about 6 years old. it's a cultural thing and many women in my country have them also...and since i was a young, it doesnt count as a sin

What does the green dot represent? I've never heard of a dot on someone's hand. I'd be scared to get my nose pierced. It's pretty thick cartilage there so it seems like it would hurt. Tell us how it goes if you get it done.

i dont think it represents anything, its just something women in my culture do. its green because they  just regular charcoal, oil and a needle, not the tattoo needle thing that they use here in the US. The women in my culture are not aware that such dots (mine is just a dot but other women have some other designs too but they are very small) are not allowed in Islam.

Also nose piercings are common in my culture too
And i sure will let you know if i ever get it done

Stranger,

Thank you for sharing that. I like to learn about other cultures. It's interesting how sometimes culture dictates actions and sometimes Islam does. I know the two are intertwined but in cases like this, they become somewhat separate.

The green dot represents 'beauty' well Pashtun women do it and i know that they consider it a beauty thing, but it's 'three green dots' tattoed on the chin for Afghan culture which means beauty, dunno about the hand?

I only have my ears pierced and InshaAllah don't intend on getting any other piercings... Getting tattoos is haram (forbidden) because it is reuining the body and I think if I'm right, may God forgive me if I'm not but I think that in a Hadith it stated that one whom gets a tattoo can never enter heaven, but if someone got it when they were in their days of ignorance then they can repent and God forgives them...  and cosmetic surgery is haram too because you should not change the way you look because God created you, and altering the genetic makeup is like playing God, also the bodies we have are given to us by Gods mercy and we should not harm nor alter them in any way. Surgery is only allowed when necessary like when for example, when you break you your nose you have to get surgery to correct it because if you don't then it could be harmful to your health etc...
Salam.
May peace be with everyone.

I can only hope that the hadith that says one can never enter heaven if they get a tattoo is incorrect.  Because to think that a kind, good, generous, God loving person would go to hell just because they have a tattoo would make Islam seem like a very unreasonable religion.

Assalamo Alikom

Sister Searching,

The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said "May Allaah curse the women who do tattoos and those for whom tattoos are done, those who pluck their eyebrows and those who file their teeth for the purpose of beautification and alter the creation of Allaah.” (al-Bukhaari, al-Libaas, 5587; Muslim, al-Libaas, 5538).

Can you imagine that the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said that from 1400 years ago, and now the science says that Tattoos cause:

1 Allergic Reactions

2 Granulomateous/lichenoid reactions

3 Pseudo-Lymphomas

4 Lymphadenopathy

5 Sarcoidosis

6 Malignant Lesions

beside viral infections, bacterial infections and fungal infections.

this is accordind to a research of the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection

Physical and Chemical Exposure Unit, and it's an European commission and here is its link:

http://www.camtattoo.cn/msds/eis_tattoo_risk_052003_en.pdf

People from 1400 years ago didn't know that but they said "we heared and we obeyed", that's Islam, Islam means submission (to God) so any order we obey it, asking why is Supplementary but doesn't affect your decision. I think that you haven't see Islam from this perspective before, while you use your mind for knowing Allah and for choosing the right religion, you don't use your mind mainly while doing orders of God.

And about the tattoo you made before, it's ok! you did it of ignorance and before Islam, some say that you should remove it but in the research which I gave you say that removal may have some risks, so it's ok to leave it, and don't worry God forgives the ignorant.

I hope I helped you.

Peace be with you all

"All the praises and thanks be to Allah Who has guided us to this, never could we have found guidance, were it not that Allah had guided us!"
