What the Bible says about Muhammad (pbuh)

By Shabir Ally

According to the Bible, God said to Moses, on whom be peace:

“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.” (The Holy Bible, New International Version, Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 18).

The prophet described in the above verse must have the following three characteristics:

1. He will be like Moses.
2. He will come from the brothers of the Israelites, i.e. the Ishmaelites.
3. God will put His words in the mouth of that prophet and he will declare what God commanded him.

Let us see which prophet God was speaking of.

1. The prophet like Moses

Some people feel that this prophecy refers to the prophet Jesus, on whom be peace. But, although Jesus* was truly a prophet of God, he is not the prophet spoken of here. He was born miraculously, and, finally, God raised him up miraculously. On the other hand, Muhammad* is more like Moses*; both were born in a natural way and both died natural deaths.

2. From among the Ishmaelites

Abraham* had two sons, Ishmael* and Isaac* (Genesis, chapter 21). Ishmael* became the grandfather of the Arab nation, and Isaac became the grandfather of the Jewish nation. The prophet spoken of was to come not from among the Jews themselves, but from among their brothers, the Ishmaelites. Muhammad*, a descendant of Ishmael, is indeed that prophet.

3. God will put His words in his mouth

“Neither the content of the revelation, nor its form, were of Mohammed’s devising. Both were given by the angel, and Mohammed’s task was only to repeat what he heard.”(World Religions from Ancient History to the Present, by Geoffrey Parrinder, p. 472)

God sent the angel Gabriel* to teach Muhammad* the exact words that he should repeat to the people. The words are therefore not his own; they did not come from his own thoughts, but were put into his mouth by the angel. These are written down in the Qur’an, word for word exactly as they came from God.

Now that we know that prophet we must listen to him, for, according to the Bible, God says: “I will punish anyone who refuses to obey him” (Good News Bible, Deut. 18:19).

Regarding #2 From among the Ishmaelites. “The prophet spoken of was to come not from among the Jews thmselves, but from among thei brothers, the Ishmaelites”. I did not see that in the Bible. Is this the interpretation/opinion of the Moslems? Can you back this up with biblical evidence? Thanks.

    • Perseveranze says:

      Peace Richard,

I will assume you are a Christian and I’ll do my best to answer you with respects to that.

      Jesus(pbuh) said to the Jews:

“Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. (From the KJV Bible, Matthew 21:43)”

^The above verse indicates that the “Kingdom of God” would’ve been taken away from the Jews.

      And then God says:

“And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. (From the KJV Bible, Genesis 17:19-21)”

At this point, we know that the Prophet has to be an Arab and can come from either Isaac(pbuh) or Ishmael(pbuh), since both are breathrin to one another. So we need to narrow it down to find out who this Prophesised Prophet(pbuh) really is.

The part of the verse that says ““I will raise up for them a prophet like you”, refers to the fact that the Prophet will resemble that of Moses(pbuh).

The Muslims believe this is referring to Muhammad(pbuh), however some Christians believe this is referring to Jesus(pbuh). We will see the comparison and draw the conclusions.

This is why we believe the verse is referring to the comming of Muhammad(pbuh) –

      i) Both had a father and a mother, while Jesus (pbuh) was born miraculously without any male intervention.

      [Mathew 1:18 and Luke 1:35 and also Al-Qur'an 3:42-47]

ii) Both were married and had children. Jesus (pbuh) according to the Bible did not marry nor had children.

iii) Both died natural deaths. Jesus (pbuh) has been raised up alive. (4:157-158)

iv) Both besides being Prophets were also kings i.e. they could inflict capital punishment. Jesus (pbuh) said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36).

      v) Both were accepted as Prophets by their people in their lifetime but Jesus (pbuh) was rejected by his
people. John chapter 1 verse 11 states, “He came unto his own, but his own received him not.”

iv) Both brought new laws and new regulations for their people. Jesus (pbuh) according to the Bible did not bring any new laws. (Mathew 5:17-18).

We can conclude from above that it could not have been a Prophet from the Jews, as the only prophet that came was Jesus(pbuh) and when we compare him to the descendant of Ishmael who is Muhammad(pbuh), we find that the latter has far more similarities to Moses(pbuh). Thus the prophesised Prophet is Muhammad(pbuh).

For more prophesies within the Bible in regards to Muhammad(pbuh), I would recommend reading this article – http://www.islam101.com/religions/christianity/mBible.htm

I hope this has sufficiently answered your question.

    • tz says:

Richard, the verse is “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers;”. If it were from the Jews, don’t you think it would have been “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among themselves;”. Also, the following verses explain the litmus test for this prophet to come.

    • Jesusislove says:

This is incorrect. In Deuteronomy alone it mentions the word “brothers” about 48 different times referring to the Israelites every single time. Not once was it used for Ishmaelites or Arabs.

In Deuteronomy 18:18, God is telling Moses these things about how he will raise a prophet like you from among their brothers, the other 11 tribes of Israel. He is therefore saying it won’t be the Levites since he said from their brothers.

Here is just another quick example:

“The priests, who are Levites–indeed the whole tribe of Levi–are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel. They shall live on the offerings made to the Lord by fire, for that is their inheritance. They shall have no inheritance among their brothers; the Lord is their inheritance, as he promised them.”

      Deuteronomy 18:1-2

God is always speaking of Israel and the sons of Israel in these verses and all throughout the Bible. Any time it speaks of Ishmael or Ishmaelites it specifically states so. Isaac had a son, his name was Jacob. God named him Israel and he had 12 sons. These are the patriarchs for the nation and the people of Israel. These are all brothers to each other. Since the entire book of Exodus and forward through the rest of the Old Testament is the story of the sons of Israel and their descendants, every mention of the word brother when used in context to a member of one of those tribes it will be speaking of the other 11 tribes of Israel, NOT Ishmael.

Throughout the entire Old Testament it goes through and narrows it down until we are pointed to how the prophet will come from the Tribe of Judah as he promised David, that his kingdom will be establish forever. It narrows it down even further when it points to more specific things about this prophet like where he will be born, what he will go through, that he will die for us.

John 5:46 also shows what Jesus Christ said in these words, “If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.”

  2. Emmanuel says:

“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow israelites; and I will put my words in his mouth, he will tell them everything I command him.” (The Holy Bible, New International Version, Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 18).

checked the NIV version of the Bible and I don’t see”…from among their brothers”. Whats written is “…from among their fellow israelites” I’m I missing something here?

  3. totti says:

u r wrong my friend the bible talks about mohamed as a false prophet

    • tz says:

Quote your reference from the bible my friend.

    • Perseveranze says:

      Peace totti,

Please could you provide your proofs. I will however reply to some verses Christians use to claim that Muhammad(pbuh) was a false prophet.

“Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings, influenced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared. They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.” [1 Timothy 4:1-3]

The prophet Muhammad(pbuh) certainly does not fit the criteria of these verses. If anything it is Paul who fits the criteria! Note the passages says that the false prophet will prohibit marriage, the one who prohibited marriage was Paul:

“Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry” [1 Corinthians 7:1]

So as we see, it is Paul who fits the description.

      Another verse Christians use is this;

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God, and this is the spirit of the antichrist, that you have heard is coming, and now is already in the world. You are from God, little children, and have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world’s perspective and the world listens to them. We are from God; the person who knows God listens to us, but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.” [1 John 4:1-6]

Muhammad perfectly fits the description of a BELIEVER according to these passages! Note the passages state:

“By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God, and this is the spirit of the antichrist”

So note, the person who confesses that Jesus is the Christ, is from God. Those who do not confess that Jesus is the Christ are the anti-Christ. Therefore Muhammad is from God, the prophet Muhammad did confess that Jesus is the Christ; Muhammad never confessed that Jesus is NOT the Christ:

“Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah;” [Holy Quran: 003.045]

It is thus clear that Muhammad(pbuh) can NOT be the false Prophet.

i would like to see that proof as well…..

  4. Bill says:

This is false information. The Bible does not say this about Mohammed. If there is any doubt then read the book of Acts where this very verse from Deuteronomy is referred to.

“And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people”. (Acts 3:20-23 KJV)

You can argue that the Bible is wrong in this case but if you think the Bible is flawed why use it at all to prove your case.

  5. paul k says:

Friends, after reading the above comments, I felt like I had a few objections/questions. Thank you for taking time to read.
    Galations 1:8
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! new international version

Do you find it a coincidence that an angel appeared to the prophet Muhammad and revealed a different gospel than the one that was presented by Jesus?

Muhammad taught there is only one Divine Being in God. He denied the Deity of Jesus, saying He was just a man – a great prophet, but not the Divine Son of God. (Qur’an 4:162-171; 6:100,101; 19:88-92

The Bible on the other hand spoke differently concerning Jesus.
1.Colossians 2:9 – In Jesus dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
2.John 1:3 – All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. [Heb. 1:2; Col. 1:16,17]

Islam denies that Jesus was crucified, that He died as a sacrifice for sin, and that He arose from the dead. (Qur’an 4:156,157)

Matthew 20:17-19 – Jesus predicted He would be crucified, then rise again.

There is much more that Mohamed taught that is in contradiction to the Bible. I would advise people to do research.

I also can’t understand how Islam accepts Allah as deity when it is mentioned multiple times that he was a deceiver/liar

1.And (the unbelievers) schemed and planned, and Allah schemed also, and the best of schemers is Allah. S. 3:54

2.Remember how the unbelievers schemed against thee, to keep thee in bonds, or to slay thee, or get thee out (of thy home). They scheme and plot, but the best of schemers is Allah. S. 8:30

Furthermore, Mohamed taught that lying is permissible

That she heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “He who makes peace between the people by inventing good information or saying good things, is not a liar.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 49, Number 857)

Lastly Mohamed was not certain of his salvation
Say: “I am no bringer of new-fangled doctrine among the messengers, NOR DO I KNOW WHAT WILL BE DONE WITH ME OR WITH YOU. I follow but that which is revealed to me by inspiration; I am but a Warner open and clear.” S. 46:9

Compare this with the assurance that Jesus gives

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ she told him, ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.’” John 11:25-27

I do not intend to be disrespectful or rude I just don’t understand how Islam tends to embrace Jesus and the Bible, and at the same time contradict all that the Bible teaches. Moreover, Muslims take certain passages and act as if it was addressed/speaking of the prophet Mohamed.

    God bless

    • Calvin says:

      Well said PAUL!

    • Basel says:

How do the verses above describe Allah as a deceiver? All it says is that the wicked can trying planning but Allah is the greatest of plans and his plans will always unravel.

Also, to make peace between people is wrong?

Second Muhammad AND your bible state that Jesus isn’t god:

      Numbers 23:19
God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

      Matthew 16:27
For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds. (Notice son of man and that this one mentions that people will be judged based on their deeds, nothing about believing in crucifixion for salvation).

      John 5:28-31
“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out–those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. (Again the Jesus mentions resurrection and being judged by our deeds and he mentions that he needs gods help to do anything: “By myself I can do nothing”)

      Luke 18:19
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good–except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’” (If jesus was god than he would be good because only god is good and he didn’t say forget about the commandments just believe in my crucifixion and that I am lord).

      John 14:28
“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. (My perception of christianity is that god and jesus are equal, but this verse says otherwise?)

      Mark 12:28
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions. (If believing in jesus as lord was so essential for salvation then wouldn’t this have been a perfect time to mention the trinity (that the oneness of god is the same as the trinity) and that believing in my crucifixion for your sins will give you salvation).
