bullet Topic: Halal Beer?
    Posted: 23 July 2005 at 6:18pm

In some Halal food store's you'll find "halal beer", some argued with me that the alcohol is what is prohibited. And that the "beer" (without the alcohol) was ok to drink.

I think the whole concept of halal beer is insane. It seems as if they are taking a lot of the western foods and drinks and branding them "halal".

Your thoughts.

(Don't know if this has been dicussed, or where to actually put this topic)

HUH?  That is strange.  If one does drink 'halal' nonalcoholic beer, it could lead to temptations to drink the real thing.  And drink it for what, the TASTE?  My dad used to drink Bud... the smell was horrible, I can still remember it.  I can only imagine the taste.

I think the whole concept is stupid.  Just putting one's self in the hands of temptation.

As-Salaam-Aleikum,

I agree that drinking halal beer could be just too tempting for some. I don't personally have a problem with being tempted by alcohol but If you walk too close to the edge of a pit you may just fall in!  To me it just makes common sense to stay away from items that are substitutes for haram things.

as-salaam aleikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

I see what you mean.. but... alcohol is the thing that is haram...

grape juice can be changed into wine but grape juice is halal for us...

vanilla extract can be made non-alcoholic

the company Kikkoman has started making a naturally brewed but alcohol-free soy sauce that will be sold in the East Asian Muslims countries...and hopefully it will spread because naturally brewed soy sauce tastes better than the non-brewed ones...

for those of you that don't know Kikkoman naturally brewed soy sauce has alcohol in it... but all purpose soy sauce does not.

these are just some examples I can think of right now...

There is no beer that has 0% alcohol.... even the alcohol free beers have about .1% of alcohol.  You cant get drunk off of it but it still has khamr (intoxicant)

this is because the fermentation process happens without intentionally fermenting the hops and barley.

I never liked the idea of alchohol free berr. However, what wrong with having beef rinds? I stopped eating pork when I was 10 b/c that's when my mom converted. I can't remember what most pork tastes like but I still miss those rinds. I'd be eternally grateful if anyone came out with beef rinds.

I loved bacon prior to my being Muslim... so now I eat Turkey bacon.... same seasoning and hickory smoke taste.... nothing wrong with that... but there is no such thing as "halal" beer due to the nature of fermentation of the grains used to make it.  It ferments before they are able to package it in bottles or cans.

The US government requires that the packaging state this on teh side with the percentage.... look on the side of the can or bottle next time your in the store.

PS... as a former beer drinker... Beer is an acquired taste... it isnt naturally good to the taste buds.. the Alcohol is what adds to the taste that makes it taste good...

I tried vegetarian sausages from Tesco or someplace, but one taste was enough to make me feel ill - I don't know how they made them, but they tasted just like pork, (which I remember very well how it tastes )  But beef sausages, now they are delishhh, especially when they are a little spicy.

Does beer really taste THAT good, that we have to make a halal version? I gota try the real thing 1 day..

See...just talking about it leads to temptation.
