What is the Quran?

Miracle of Allah and Final Testament to Humankind

“The Quran: literally, ‘that which is often recited.’ A web of rhythm and meaning, the words of which throb through Muslim worship and which, at every point in the believer’s life , break surface, sanctifying existence with the scent of eternity.” [Abdul Wadod Shalabi in "Islam - Religion of Life"]

The Quran represents the fountainhead of Divine guidance for every Muslim. Its revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his practical implementation of the revelation, completed God’s blessing for humanity, in providing us with a belief and value system that is valid for all times.

The Quran confirms the revelations given to earlier Prophets, though these might not be accessible to us, in the form they were originally revealed. The most sublime language and a rational message that directly appeals to the human heart have caused this Divine book to move nations and civilizations. It will continue to guide those who turn to God with a sincere heart, for all times.

Feel free to explore the Quran online or to order a free hard-copy of the translation.

  1. Bahaa Elaidi says:

I used to listen to the Quran from your website but it does not seem to be working from my home computer (MS Windows 7)

  2. anthony says:

Magnificent website this is. I enjoy learning about other religions and cultures.

  3. Wil says:

Muslims often claim that they have the original Qur’an. But it was in the head of Muhammad and he is dead so there is no original. Then Abu Bakr made the first written edition of the Qur’an. One copy was given to Helsa, Muhammad’s widow, for safe keeping. But about 20 years later Uthman did a revision, and burnt all the other Qur’ans including the unaltered Qur’an that Hefsa possessed. why? There was no possiblity of it being corrupted!
Two copies of the Uthman third revision exists in the Topkapi Museum in Turkey and the other in the Al-Majid Al-Kaberrd in Yemen. But yet these are kept under lock and key. If Muslims are so sure that even the third eidition of the Qur’an has not been alter, then why are photo copies of these two Qur’an not made available to the public?

  4. Wil says:

If the Qur’an is eternal, and Allah is eternal, then doesn’t Islam have two eternal?

    • rpre says:

So, more than one thing cannot be eternal in order for a religion to be valid?

    • rpre says:

Maybe the impression that you have is that if the Quran is eternal then that means we, as muslims, worship it? Allah created the Quran, He is the only one that we worship.
We also believe that our life after death is eternal, but that does not make Allah any less worthy of our worship, as His eternal nature is not alone what makes Him worthy of our worship, so I guess I’m not sure what your point (or perhaps criticism?) referred to when you mentioned the enternal characteristic of the Quran alongside the eternal characteristic of Allah.

-ANd anything I have said correct is from the mercy of Allah, and any error I have made is from myself & I ask Allah’s forgiveness

  6. Assalamu Alaikum.

Please, to read about the Salat and the dua in Arabic. I also need a rug for prayings.

    Thank you.

  7. Fighting for God.

In the Gospel Jesus very clearly taught that Christians are not to fight for their religion. His apostles also taught the same:

(T)urn the other cheek… love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:39, 44).

Put back your sword in its place… for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. (Matthew 26:52)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesian 6:12)

But in the Qur'an it says that the Gospel taught that fighting for God (religion) is acceptable.

(T)hey fight in the way of God; they kill, and are killed; that is a promise binding upon God in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Koran (Sura 9:111, Arberry).
What the Qur'an teaches about the Gospel is wrong. The Gospel clearly prohibits fighting for religion. The Qur'an does not confirm the Bible at this major point.

  8. The Qur’an confirms the revelations given to earlier Prophets, though these might not be accessible to us, in the form they were originally revealed……..is that true? let's consider a few teachings of the bible vs the teachings of the Quran.

  9. Does God have sons?

The Bible ; Exodus 4: 22Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.’”.

In Deuteronomy 325They are corrupt and not his children;.
to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.
6Is this the way you repay the Lord,
    you foolish and unwise people?
Is he not your Father, your Creator, a.
who made you and formed you?

Deuteronomy is one of the books in the Bible that muslims apologists often quote to validate the prophethood of Muhammed , in this book Moses tells us that God is the father of the children of israel and they are God's children.

In the New Testament we read repeatedly that christians are God's children.for example in the gospel of John 1 11 He (Jesus) came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

But when we turn to the Quran :

    Sura 5: 18 Sahih International.
But the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allah and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created….

    Sahih International
Sura 19:89-96 And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son."
    to top
90 You have done an atrocious thing.

the rest of the chapter goes on to say that the whole creation stands in shock in hearing such claim.

    Sura 9:30 Sahih International.
The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah "; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?

in this last sura the Quran calls on allah to destroy the jews and the christians for saying allah has a son.

  10. We must not choose to test God. Testing God is a great sin and there is a command against it in the Bible: Do not test the LORD your God (Deuteronomy 6:16, NIV). However, while we must not test God, God does command us to test prophets:

For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect–if that were possible. See, I (Jesus) have told you ahead of time. (Matthew 24:24-25, NIV).

Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:19-22, NIV).

Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1, NIV).

For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14, NIV).

  11. Muhammad claims to be a prophet of God. Christians cannot reject his claim as impossible because Christians believe that God has sent prophets. But this does not mean that Christians must blindly accept that Muhammad is a prophet, that would be foolish and disobedient. Instead we are commanded to test prophets to determine whether they are from God. Muhammad may be a true prophet or he may be a false prophet. We must test him to see which he is. Are you prepared to test Muhammad as God has commanded?

How do we test a prophet? We test a prophet by examining his prophecy to see whether it is true. The prophecy of Muhammad is recorded in the Qur'an so we need to test what the Qur'an says to see whether Muhammad is a true prophet.

The whyislam webpage makes a bold claim that the Qur'an confirms the teaching of the Jewish and Christian scriptures.
we can use this claim to test Mohammed. as we already proved one area where this claim is false. the bible attests that we are Allah's children and the Quran calls on its allah to destroy those who make such a claim. let's continue

  12. The Death of Jesus.
    Isaiah 53
4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all……. Jesus clearly taught that he would die and be raised from the dead:

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. (Matthew 16:21)
Jesus also said that his death and resurrection was what the prophets before him had foretold:

He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (Luke 24:45-47)
Jesus also explained the meaning of his death:

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave– just as the Son of Man (Jesus) did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:26-28)

"We (the Jews) slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the Messenger of God" – yet they did not slay him, neither crucified him, only a likeness of that was shown to them…. and they slew him not of certainty – no indeed; God raised him up to Him; God is All-mighty, All-wise.(Sura 4:156-157.

Jesus taught that his death on the cross was to pay for our sins and that it was part of God's work that he came to perform. However in the Qur'an Jesus' death on the cross is no death at all. Thus the Qur'an does not confirm the Bible at this most important point.

  13. Hassan Curub says:

Muhammad[pbbh] is final prophet from ALLAH and if you are not willing to accept that blindly in fact you are right because no prophet was sent with out miracle to convince his people so though Muhammad has been giving differrent miracles the greatest he arrived with was qur'an so its proof enough to assure his prophecy so go and read qur'an

  14. Islam is there since the first man landed on this Earth " ADAM", and last prophet is Mohammed SAS this completes Islam. Adam was Muslim and his religion was Islam. if you have any other opinion do let me know.

  15. Eng Abdikariin Tacshiir says:

[Mention] when Allah said, "O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ.

  16. Brother Blaise, In Islam we believe God neither begets nor is born (surah 112:3). It is important to realize the style of speech in the bible is not the same as the one we use today. We cannot take everything in the bible literally and there is figure of speech present there. The phrase "son of God" has been misunderstood and misinterpreted by the christen as the begotten son of God. However, when you look into the context in which it is used in the bible its intended meaning is "follower of the commandment of God". Furthermore, if you claim that Jesus(pbuh) is the begotten son of God then you are also claiming that God had sexual intercourse with Mary. The word beget means to procreate and it is an aspect of sex. Are you willing to accept such a claim?

In addition, One and Only true God is All-Powerful and eternal therefore he is independent(he does not need anything). Jesus(pbuh) cannot be God because he was dependent just like us(he ate and drank like us), therefore he was only a human being. All the miracles he was able to accomplish was done by God's permission. In addition, there is NOT a SINGLE verse in the BIBLE where Jesus himself said, " I am God and Worship me". Why do christen claims Jesus(pbuh) is God when he never himself claimed this?

The Qur'an, the Torah, the Gospel are Scriptures of Allah that He sent down to His Messengers, peace be upon them. The "Qur'an" is Allah's speech, not a created thing that may perish nor is it an attribute of any created thing. Gabriel brought down the Qur'an to Muhammad, peace be upon him, bit by bit as circumstances warranted over a period of twenty-three years. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, would memorize the verses he received and recite them to the companions who happened to be with him and order them to write the verses down immediately.

Muhammad, peace be upon him, himself used to keep a copy of the revealed portions in his house. The Qur'an, the last of Allah's Scriptures, is divided into 114 surah (chapters) of unequal length. It is one of the fundamental sources of Islamic teachings. Allah revealed some of the Qur'an's suwar and verses in Makkah, and the rest He revealed in Madinah. The Makkan suwar and verses deal mainly with the issues of aqeedah[7], such as tawhid, the belief in the Oneness of Allah, the signs of the existence of Allah, resurrection, life after death, or the Day of Resurrection.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, laid great emphasis on the Oneness of Allah, as did all the Prophets and Messengers of Allah before him, beginning with Adam and ending with Muhammad, peace be upon them all. Suwar revealed in Madinah dealt with the actions of the individuals and every aspect of life, including forms of worship.

[7]Aqeedah is a religious tenet upon which one's mind and heart is firmly settled, and to which one holds and adheres.
